Why Nola...

I sat at work on Superbowl night and listened to the shouts and cheers careening from inside the patient's rooms. Then the "No!" and the "Come on!" shouts that followed. You see, my "hometown" played the New Orleans Saints on that fateful night and my heart soared when the gold and black won. The nurse sitting across from me scowled when I hooped and howled while holding my New Orleans jazz coffee mug sipping on my Cafe Du Monde coffee.

"Why would you root for them when you live and work here?" The question made me pause and then the grin spread across my face.

The only answer I could muster was the truth. "I may live and work here, but Nola is my home."

The nurse furrowed her brow and shrugged. The comment made my little brain flutter and the wheels start turning. A warmth crept up my toes waving through my spine to hug my chest. I took another sip of the dark elixir that originated in the French Market on the outskirts of the Quarter. The hot liquid went down smooth, like everything else in Nola...smooth and easy. Sexy and slow. As I gear up for yet another plane ride in April, I reflect on the warm breeze that will greet my face when I step outside the airport. The ride on the highway with the canals flanking me, reminding me of the pride my city holds.

My friend reminded me last night that Fat Tuesday is coming up. I smiled. I've never been to Mardi Gras. Don't have the desire to see the spectacle. I'd much rather enjoy her brick, lopsided streets in the hot afternoon sun sitting on the curb with a freshly poured rum and Diet Coke, rocking my hips to the jazz floating through the corridors. New Orleans isn't about Mardi Gras or Bourbon Street. New Orleans is about "cool". You know? Like when Paul Newman plays cards with the other cons in Cool Hand Luke. "Yeah, well sometimes nothin' can be a real cool hand." Just like a cloudless sky, sun beatin' down on the pavement and nothin' between your lips but the edge of a cup and a hum.

Nola seethes all that is possible and very thing dark that comes with it. Be careful what ya' wish for when you step into Jackson Square and watch the guitar pickers and fortune tellers. Be careful what ya' wish for when you grin at the men calling out to step into their carriage for a stroll. Be careful what ya' wish for when you stop in front of Preservation Hall to hear the sweet melody floating from inside those washed out green doors. You see...GPS doesn't work in the quarter and a minute really is an hour. Time creeps like a gator on the prowl so there's more time for those wishes to marinate...to fester.  Be them good or bad...be them well wishes or curses. In the alleys and courtyards someone is listening and those wishes do come true.

So, here I sit in a snow-laden land with dreams of smooth voices telling me "Hello" and warm smiles tempting me everywhere I turn. I keep "cool" jazz on the iPod soothing the boil in my blood biding my time til I get to go home.

Looking Back

January is always a month of reflection for me. Ringing in the New Year means looking back at the ones past and finding the meaning in what has led me to the place I currently reside in. Or...how my jangled thought processes came together to form the projects I am currently working on. It amazes me how everything seems to come full circle. So, I am going to send out a little piece of my glittery, disco ball brain from ten years ago. I reviewed an old poetry journal of mine and dusted a couple from the vault. The series I've written, Four Doors and a Dungeon, tells the tale of a lonely god and the people *be them mythological or human* that travel through his life. These two poems were, unknowingly, the precursers for these books. It's so strange how life flows like this. Strange and wonderful.

"Solitary Reply"
Nature has brought to me this timeless madness that I so comfort.
With sharp pains in every breath
I rise to seek my future.
Secrets have broken the bird and left the cage
For the spectacle beneath the tired suede of this old skin.
And yet I continue
To travel through my universe in solace.
With each passing of the sparrow
I rotate twice as fast
Gripping the wings of Athena to grant me strength
To compliment this weary shield.
I have come to my senses for guidance and hope.
Birth of the new star inspires me once more.
Twinkle she does
Just as she promised as I seek my reflection
In her wise wisdom of sorts.
I need not seek the darkness about the candle
But the candle itself.
Clever girl cascading with the leaves
Hiding in the eaves and seeing the resting ones
Out of their stone facade.
We move you know?
The slightest step to leave the heaviest of footprints.
They will tell me.
The plan was conceived even before Eve
And after Adam secured the garden.
How far do I travel now?
As far as my imagination will allow is the solitary reply.

"No title"
Evil enchantress, bells for charms
Slender coil for arms
Indeed we have come round again.
This time to begin
Just as Apollo's sky ends
And the doors at Delphi slumber.
Sleep sweet angel with the elves
Creeping in the canopy shelves of the withering pines.
Always divine creating the needles entwined
Over the path to the one it led
Whose solitary voice spoke to the dead.
As the creatures gathered for the festival
Of incense, wine and trickery.
Gypsy Queen lend me your hand
For here we stand among the ancient ones.
May we call out the winds so as
The ones in flight may find their twilight
Here to us in this realm of peace?
Grace for us as the flesh
Will cease and the answers
Have been written in the dew-tinted buds among the trees.

Ahrgggg....I found me some buried treasure!

That's right...I went a searchin' and found a great treasure indeed! The bounty goes by the name of Alisha Rai, an author for Samhain Publishing. My goal was to search for novellas and novels that had a common theme...voluptuous full-figured gals and the muscular, sexy men who adore them. Boy, did I hit a jackpot! Ms. Rai's first title is Cabin Fever. An insecure recluse who happens upon a wounded hottie on her front porch makes for a steamy romance and even steamier love scenes. I loved how the heroine finds her self-worth and inner goddess through the eyes of a man who loves her not only for her wonderful knitting ability *gotta read the book*, but for her smarts and sensuality as well. So, after getting all hot and bothered by the first book I just had to purchase title number two, Glutton for Pleasure. In Glutton, the beautiful full-figured Indian chef finds her inner bad girl with two hunky twins. What could be better than a good guy/bad guy sandwich? How about a little dash of humor and a whole lotta self confidence tossed in there. This book just made me feel good at the end. I love menage books where the three end up in a happy, healthy relationship. Oh, if life could be so scarlet! Ms. Rai's latest release will be with Samhain in February of 2010 titled Veiled Desire. I can't wait to see what she has in store for the month of romance. I bet this one is going to heat up my Valentine's Day. Check out Alisha Rai with Samhain Publishing and let her sultry words, sexy full-figured heroines and hunky heroes heat up yours. Have a great holiday!

Housekeeping...

I hope that everyone is having a pleasant day. It's dreary and drizzling here at home. Great day for hot tea and a cinnamon roll. Then again...any day is good for that. I was up late swimming among the blogs, keeping up with the latest news regarding the Harlequin Horizons venture. I've gathered it's a collective agreement that HQN has made a major mistake, at least at this point in time. Authors are up in arms, rightfully so, and voicing their concerns. Romance Writers of America, of which I am a member, has made a bold stand to advocate for all its writers and authors. I am very proud to be a part of an organization that is willing to fight for its members. Keep up the good work. *but please review your guidelines for epubs, please* Wanted to let everyone know that I put excerpts on my website for Three Doors and a Dungeon. Door One is with Theresa Stevens who is the managing editor for Red Sage Publishing. I'm crossing my fingers that she likes what she's got and signs it. So...if she does the excerpts may change a bit due to editing. But, enjoy them for now and we'll see what happens.

Step right up folks...talent for sale!

Step right up is right! Let me tell you what I do. I am a full time mother, wife, nurse and overall manager of disasters in my house. Why on this beautiful green Earth would I want to have to pay to have my books stacked on a shelf? The slush pile, the standared rejection letters, the "please re-write and re-send" are the standards writers go through to make the "big break" into authorship. It's the same game in nursing. A new nurse cuts her teeth on the night shift and earns her stripes in "the suck", as the Marines call it. A great manuscript doesn't mean it is going to sell to the mass audiences and I understand that publishing is ultimately a business, but when did money override talent? Harlequin Horizons is a new company that offers the slush pile and rejected writers a chance at selling their wares to the mass market. I understand the concept, but where are the police? Who is going to be the critiquer to faithfully deem the work as worthy of a shelf? Let's be honest...just because a writer can put words onto paper doesn't mean it's a work of great fiction. As an Erotic Romance writer I understand that we are the red-headed step children, but there is still prestige in having an editor look at your work and say, "That's it! Your voice shines and I love this book. Let me sign you!" Writers write for the enjoyment of the written word, while authors write not only for the enjoyment, but for the paycheck as well. Harlequin is the largest name in Romance fiction. They have prided themselves on being a difficult house to crack into and have released quality work. Now, anyone can be a Harlequin writer if the dollar signs shine on your self-pubbed work. A work that cost the writer thousands of dollars to change their title to author. Harlequin can now be labeled a vanity press and if the writer doesn't have the money to play the game, well..."Welcome to the suck!"

My First Book Review

There are those authors, you know the ones, twhen you pick up or download their book it's already assumed you will be crying, laughing and probably angry within the next two days. Megan Hart is just such the author for me. Her books thrill me and rip my heart out every time I open her pages. And I love it! I closed the back cover of Pleasure and Purpose last night. This book contains three novellas, all connected through the bond of three friends. Three men who are broken. Three men who have made mistakes. And three men who found peace and redemption in the arms of their Sister of Solace. The Order of Solace reminds me much of the historical stories of Mary of Magdalene. And we all know how much I love her! The Order is a harem, so to speak, of spiritual sisters who are assigned to her patron, a man who is in need of solace. Edward, Cillian and Alaric are the three patrons who discover that sometimes what we want is not necessarily what we need. Stillness, Honest and Determinata learn their patron's needs and bring the three troubled men to their solace. The underlying spirituality of the The Quivers and The Holy Family is obviously taken from the template of all basic religious concepts, The Holy Trinity. The religiousness of the Sisters is not overwhelming and easy to understand. I enjoyed the setting of the book and the scenery that Ms. Hart described. Cillian's castle in Firth is richly appointed and makes the reader feel as if she's been embraced in a masculine hug. The book is very submissive/dominance based. Alaric's story was refreshing. I don't want to give too much away, but it's exciting and sexy to read about a fragile man who is able to be so strong. I loved the concept of the five principles, my favorite being Women we begin and women we shall end. Each woman followed this principle to find their own solace as well. Overall, I enjoyed this read. The characters didn't make me cry or feel the chest ache like Deeper and Broken did, but it was able to take me to a place where I wanted to sit in the Waiting Position for a handsome man to command me. I must also mention the cover of the book. As expected, Ms. Hart has another fabulous cover. It is sensual and enticing while not being overly sexual. I highly recommend this read to anyone who enjoys Historical Erotic Romance.

Monster Day

Today is going to be a monster of a day for me. I have to finish my pitch for a contest I'm going to enter on Nov. 30th. I have to finish the epilogue for Door Three and I still am working on this website to make it pretty. I'm so excited to start The Dungeon. It's a book that has been heavy on my heart for a long time and the characters have been screaming at me to get their names on paper so they can brag about their stories. I'm holding my breath waiting for the editor from Red Sage Publishing to contact me. I hope she likes my book and understands what I'm trying to do. I want all women to feel beautiful and embrace their romantic and sexy side. I've got three new outlines down on paper and I promise that the characters are broken and looking for some Elmer's! I can't wait for them to whisper their words to me. Hope everyone has a great week.

Hello and Welcome

Hello and welcome! This is my first time to blog and to be honest setting all of this up was a bit intimidating. But, I have kept my eyes straight and the coffee pot brewing and here I am. I plan to review books that I have read through this blog and update on new information that comes my way. My first series of books are called Three Doors and a Dungeon. You guessed it...there are four books in the line. The genres range from contemporary to paranormal to mythological. There is a fantasy in there for everyone. As I receive information about my books I will post my news on this blog. So...I have my running shoes on and ready to get started on this wonderful adventure!
